Part of the BBC's Tchaikovsky Experience, Charles Hazlewood presents the first in a two-part docudrama recreating key moments in the life of the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Ed Stoppard stars in the title role, while Alice Glover plays his wife Antonina Milyukova. Excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Sleeping Beauty" are performed by the Mariinsky Young Philharmonic, conducted by Charles Hazlewood. Performers include Natasha Paremsky, Sasha Sitkovetsky, Irina Matayeva, Uliana Lopatkina and Ilya Kuznetsev.
A three-episode TV mini-series produced by the BBC, "Beethoven" is a very powerful and moving docudrama based on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Fantastically written and beautifully directed, the series constitutes a thorough and accurate reconstruction of Beethoven's life, from his troubled childhood to his death at the age of 56. Paul Rhys's masterful portrayal of Beethoven is particularly noteworthy, doing well to convey in vivid colour the natural genius of the Great Man and the isolation, turmoil and despair he experienced throughout his eventful life. Insightful narration from the popular conductor, composer and presenter Charles Hazlewood does well to add a sophisticated educational dimension to the series, as well as to encourage a seamless and comfortable flow of the story. This is an absolute must-watch!
A gem from the BBC, "The Genius of Mozart" is an enlightening and enveloping reconstruction of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756--1791) life. Masterfully written and directed, this three-episode UK TV mini-series became an instant hit when aired in March of 2004, so much so as to inspire the equivalent to be made of Ludwig Van Beethoven's life (a three-part series simply called "Beethoven", which I have also uploaded).
